Summary
[edit]DescriptionSt James' church - view east - geograph.org.uk - 868336.jpg |
English: St James' church - view east. St James' church > 868324 - 868365 is a large building dating from the 13th century, extensively restored by architect Ewan Christian during the 1870s. The north porch > 868332 has a holy water stoup set into its wall, and the upper half of the priest door was filled in at some time. The most notable feature of the church is the early C15 wineglass-shaped pulpit > 868343 with its painted panels depicting St Gregory, St Ambrose, St Jerome and St Augustine and the two donors - similar in style to the pulpit at St Margaret's/Burnham Norton > 865899. The C15 rood screen panels > 868346 depict eleven disciples and St Matthias. The font > 868369 dates from the 15th century and the elaborately carved, coloured and gilded font cover dates from the same time. Some of the benches have poppyheads and carved animals > 868359. The church is open every day. For more information see: http://www.norfolkchurches.co.uk/castleacre/castleacre.htm |
