English: St Ethelbert's church - west window. The Grade I listed St Ethelbert's church > 1313165 was built on the site of an earlier Saxon church. It has a thatched roof, an unusually small and short tower and a magnificent Norman south doorway. Inside there is a large painting on the north wall depicting St Christopher, dating from the 15th to early 16th century - the north wall tilts peculiarly outwards > 1313171 - 1313172. The probably most noteworthy feature of the church is the large collection of stained glass > 1313174 - some of it medieval English > 1313175 - some other originating from Rouen and from Langley Priory > 1313176. The glass was installed in 1826 when Lady Beauchamp Proctor of nearby Langley Hall commissioned the Norfolk stained glass artist and glazier, Samuel Yarrington (1781-1846) to arrange a collection of panels in the church. These included continental pieces imported by the Norwich-based dealer, J.C.Hampp (d.1825), as well as 15th century English glass, reputedly from Langley Abbey. The west window (seen here) contains roundels made by Lowestoft stained glass artist Robert Allen (1745-1835) > 1313178 who was principal decorator and later manager of the Lowestoft Porcelain Manufactory until its closure in 1803. Other works by the artist can be seen in several nave windows as well as in the east window. Much of the remaining glass is continental but some of it is the work of Samuel Yarrington, who also created the church's Royal Arms of George IV > 1313179.
