St Endellion: Port Gaverne cellars

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: St Endellion: Port Gaverne cellars.
  • A courtyard of converted fish cellars stands beyond the beach.
  • While it killed the coastal trade in slate, the arrival of the London & South Western Railway late in the nineteenth century had its benefits. John Warden Page noted that previously thousands of Cornish fish were wasted because they could not be got to market speedily. The railway changed that, exporting mackerel and pilchards from Port Isaac Road or Delabole. The cellars were where pilchards were salted and pressed into barrels.
