Summary

[edit]
Description
English: "The CURIOUS SCULPTURE, high above the door. During the early Victorian rebuilding of the nave and chancel, the SCULPTURE was found under the EAST WINDOW, over the ALTAR. It presents a medieval image of ST ELOI – Latin, ST ELIGIUS, PATRON SAINT OF FARRIERS. The legend is that St Eligius, faced with a horse possessed of the devil, that would not stand still to be shod, he cut off its leg, nailed the shoe on and then replaced the leg. On his making the sign of the cross, the leg was miraculously reunited with the horse!" www.durweston.org.uk/CHCH%20HISTORY%20BOT.htm
