ILLINOIS STATE BUILDING

Close to the Observation Wheel rose the magnificent Palace of the State of Illinois, of an exceedingly rich design, both in architecture and sculpture, in the French Renaissance style. The building was 198 feet long and 144 feet deep. The immense main entrance was reached over a broad flight of stairs, flanked by the colossal, sittling statues of Grant and Douglas. The main hall extended through three stories and was roofed over a splendid dome. The floor of this hall was of a rich design in mosaic. Beyond this hall there was a large, beautiful room with paneled ceiling and a pictorial frieze depicting the interesting history of the state. In accordance with the importance of Illinois among the states of the Union, this building, as well as the exhibits from the state in the exhibition palaces, belonged to the most beautiful and were a credit to its citizens.
