Summary

[edit]
Description Charleston is a city of churches, which is something that was quite clear while I was living there. On my way to work in the mornings, I would only travel about four blocks, but in the process I passed five of the city's historic churches, all of which were well-preserved and kept in good condition by their congregations. The most memorable church from my many experiences in the city, however, is the St. Phillip's Church, which has a large, multi-tiered tower that juts out into Church Street above several Tuscan-style porticos. Housing the oldest religious congregation in the state of South Carolina, the building replaced a set of earlier buildings dating back to 1680, and was constructed between 1835 and 1836, with the tower being completed in 1850, and for a time serving as a rear range lighthouse to guide ships into Charleston Harbor. Today, it is a national historic landmark, and among the most notable buildings in the city.
