ls whohad invented it. When word that GeneralTom Harris, commander of the district, for-merly telegraph operator in Hannibal, was at anear-by farm-house, living on the fat of the land,the army broke camp without further ceremony.Half-way there they met General Harris, who THE BOYS LIFE OF MARK TWAIN 409 ordered them back to quarters. They called himfamiliarly Tom, and told him they werethrough with that camp forever. He beggedthem, but it was no use. A little further on theystopped at a farm-house for supplies. A tall,bony woman came to the door. You re Secesh, aint you? Lieutenant Clemens said: We are, madam, de- and rolled out of a big hay-window into the barn-yard below. The rest of the brigade seized theburning hay and pitched it out of the same win-dow. The lieutenant had sprained his ankle whenhe struck, and his boil was still painful, but theburning hay cured him—for the moment. Hemade a spring from under it; then, noticing thatthe rest of the army, now that the fire was out.

THE ARMY HAS ITSHAIR CUT. fenders of the noble cause, and we should like tobuy a few provisions. The request seemed to inflame her. Provisions ! she screamed. Provisions forSecesh, and my husband a colonel in the UnionArmy. You get out of here ! She reached for a hickory hoop-pole that stoodby the door, and the army moved on. Whenthey reached the home of Colonel Bill Splawn, itwas night and the family had gone to bed. Sothe hungry army camped in the barn-yard andcrept into the hay-loft to sleep. Presently some-body yelled Fire ! One of the boys had beensmoking and had ignited the hay. Lieutenant Clemens, suddenly wakened, madea quick rotary movement away from the blaze seemed to think his performance amusing, herose up and expressed himself concerning thewar, and military life, and the human race ingeneral. They helped him in, then, for his anklewas swelling badly. In the morning Colonel Splawn gave the armya good breakfast and it moved on. Lieutenant.Clemens, however, did not get far
