Summary

[edit]
Description This is the former Squire Watkins Inn, located off of Haywood Road near US 441 in the town of Dillsboro, North Carolina. The grand Queen Anne-Style house was constructed in 1880 for Squire J.C. Watkins, the first magistrate of the town of Dillsboro, and features a two-story porch with a sawn ballustrade, two protruding square towers that sit at the corners of the house’s front facade and are rotated at a 45 degree angle as compared to the rest of the house, and a widow’s walk atop the roof. Arguably the grandest of Dillsboro’s homes, the house remained in the family of Squire Watkins until 1983, when it was bought by a family that restored the structure and opened it as a bed and breakfast. However, the recession of 2008 hit the tourist economy of Dillsboro hard, and, combined with the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad ceasing operations out of the town, a decline in business ensued, and, the inn, due to its secluded location, was one of the victims of the economic downturn. The inn was put up for sale, but later taken off the market. Today, it sits empty and abandoned, with several cottages showing signs of vandalism and forced entry, the vegetation in the yard becoming unkempt and severely overgrown, and the main house being left a gloomy, empty, hollow shell looming on a knoll overlooking the railroad tracks and the Tuckaseigee River.
