English: Rockhampton Morning Bulletin
28 April 1927 SPRINGSURE AMBULANCE CAR BURNT A report received by Inspector M. O'Connor states that the Ford Ambulance car in that centre was badly damaged by fire on Monday night last. The Ambulance Superintendent, Mr. Edward Charles Haswell, with two mechanics, were engaged in refitting the differential, when the torque rod bumped against the petrol tank, knocking the tap off. The petrol immediately commenced to run out, and caught fire. They were working by the light of another car's headlights, and also of a Storm King petrol light, which was about 6 ft from the car. Extinguishers were quickly brought into use, and sand was thrown on by willing assistants, so that the fire was put out before the car was destroyed. The damage included the bad scorching of the body, the charring of the floorboards and upholstery, and both the petrol tank and the battery were rendered useless. Some spares and Ambulance equipment were also destroyed. The cause of the fire is unknown, but it is thought that either the torque rod short circuited between the battery and the petrol tank and thus caused the fire, or that tho fumes of the escaping petrol ignited from the Storm King light. The damage was estimated at about £45. The car was insured for £100, and was also covered with a comprehensive third party policy for £1000.
