He was appointed United States marshal by President Cleve-land, and tilled the office with great satisfaction to the public and creditto himself. His family came from Lynchburg, Va., and moved to Ken-tucky, where he was born ,at Owensboro, June i, 1841, and at which placehe studied law, moved West, and after engaging in the Kansas war,and a trip out on the plains on foot, returned and settled in KansasCity and obtained his license to practice law in Independence, Mo., atnineteen years of age. He raised a local company, of which he wasmade captain, in Kansas City, for home service on the border betweenMissouri and Kansas. He assisted to capture Liberty Arsenal, in Claycounty, and bring the arms south of the Missouri river. He disbanded the home company, and on the approach of the Fed-eral forces commanded by Captain Stanley (afterwards General Stanley),joined an infantry company as private and was at the
