Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Strasbourg (?), Around 1475 Our Lady on the crescent moon. Limewood. The small figure of the Virgin was used for private devotion. Face and hair are worn from kissing. The aspect of use therefore took precedence over the artistic value of the figure, which shows a high degree of technical mastery. Despite the small format, the robe forms a complicated structure of spatial layers with which the artist demonstrates all his skills. Works like these are the forerunners of the Kunstkammer objects that have filled the royal courts since the 16th century.
Deutsch: Strassburg (?), um 1475 Muttergottes auf der Mondsichel. Lindenholz.
