Strasbourg (?), Around 1460-1470. Saint Sebastian. Limewood. Saint Sebastian was shot at by archers as a martyr. His body, pierced by arrows, has been depicted almost naked since the late Middle Ages. The Strasbourg sculpture follows an older iconography, showing the saint accompanied with a bundle of arrows in hand. The clothing allowed the artist a virtuoso game with moving garments, as it became increasingly popular in southern Germany from the 1460s. Deutsch: Straßburg (?), um 1460-1470.
Heilige Sebastian. Lindenholz. Der heilige Sebastian wurde als Martyrer von Bogenschützen beschossen. Sein von Pfeilen durchbohrter Körper wird seit dem Spätmittelalter fast nackt dargestellt. Die Straßburger Skulptur folgt einer älteren Ikonographie, die den begleiteten Heiligen mit dem Pfeilbündel in der Hand zeigt. Die Kleidung erlaubte dem Künstler ein virtuoses Spiel mit bewegten Gewandmassen, wie es in Süddeutschland ab der 1460er Jahren zunehmend beliebt wurde. |
