Description
English: Bernard von Breidenbach (around 1400 Mainz - 1468 end.). Erhard Reuwich (around 1400 Mainz-1466 Paris). Peregrinatio in Terram Sanctam, Mainz, Erhard Reuwich, February 11, 1486. Woodcuts and typographic text printing on paper. With the pilgrimage of the Mainz canon Bernard von Breydenbach to the Holy Land, the triumphal procession of illustrated travelogues in book printing begins. A draftsman accompanied the author on the dangerous journey. Erhard Reuwich captured the most impressive places and the typefaces of the languages encountered there in pictures and later translated them into woodcuts. The centers of the trip were illustrated in detail: the Holy Sepulcher of Christ, the surrounding Church of the Holy Sepulcher and the city of Jerusalem.

Ein Zeichner begleitete den Autor auf der gefährlichen Reise. Erhard Reuwich hielt die eindrücklichsten Orte und die Schriftbilder dort angetroffener Sprachen bildlich fest und übertrug sie später in Holzschnitte. Detailliert illustriert wurden die Zentren der Reise: das Heilige Grab Christi, die umgebende Grabeskirche und die Stadt Jerusalem.
