English: Hans Kamensetzer (?)
(verifiable in Strasbourg and Vienna 1471-1487). Birth of Christ, around 1470. Hardwood; original version. This natal scene, which was created in the Strasbourg area of Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden, is one of the highest quality sculptures of the late Gothic period. The work captivates with the grace of expression, the finesse of the execution and the well-preserved color version. It should be the centerpiece of a shrine, probably with movable wings and a roof. On the back wall of this shrine a landscape could have been painted from which the shepherds came.

Zu den qualitätvollsten Skulpturen der Spätgotik zählt diese Geburtsszene, die im Straßburger Umkreis des Niclaus Gerhaert von Leyden entstanden ist. Das Werk besticht durch die Anmut des Ausdrucks, die Raffinesse der Ausführung und die gut erhaltene Farbfassung. Sie dürfte das Kernstück eines Schreins sein, wahrscheinlich mit beweglichen Flügeln und einem Dach. Auf der Rückwand dieses Schreins könnte eine Landschaft gemalt gewesen, sein aus der die Hirten kamen. |
