Description

Master of the Mornau portrait (active in Bavaria or Tyrol). Portrait of Alexander Mornauer, around 1470-1480. Coniferous wood. As head of the city chancellery, Mornauer was one of the most powerful men in Landshut. In her hand she is holding a letter from a grateful client. His clothing expresses wealth and importance. Apparently he is depicted in his wood-paneled office. The gripping, extremely direct-looking portrait is based on a drawing from life. London National Gallery.

Mornauer war als Leiter der städtischen Kanzlei einer der mächtigsten Männer in Landshut. In der Hand hält ihr den Brief eines dankbaren Klienten. Seine Kleidung drückt Wohlstand und Bedeutung aus. Offenbar ist er in seiner holzgetäfeltem Amtsstube dargestellt. Das packende, überaus direkt wirkende Bildnis basiert auf einer Zeichnung nach dem Leben. London National Gallery.
