Description

Central Germany (or southern Netherlands?), Around 1450. Martyrdom of St. Catherine. Alabaster with partial setting. Saint Catherine was killed during the persecution of Christians under Emperor Maxentius. The relief concentrates all the motifs of the legend in a very small space: on the right the emperor being executed by the executioner, on the top left the broken wheel that was destroyed by an angel as an instrument of torture through divine help. The city in the background could be illuminated from the rear. The abundance of details served the private prayer, with you the believer should delve into the topic.

Deutsch: Mitteldeutschland (oder südlichen Niederlande?), um 1450. Martyrium der heilige Katharina. Alabaster mit Teilfassung. Die heilige Katherina wurde bei der Christenverfolgung unter Kaiser Maxentius getötet. Dass Relief konzentriert auf engstem Raum alle Motive der Legende: rechts den Kaiser bei der Hinrichtung durch den Scharfrichter, links oben das zerbrochene Rad das als Folterinstrument durch göttliche Hilfe von einem Engel zerstört wurde. Die Stadt im Hintergrund ließ sich von der Rückseite beleuchten. Die Fülle der Details diente der Privat Andacht, bei dir sich die Gläubige in das Thema vertiefen sollte.
