Summary

[edit]
Description Middle Rhine workshop. (active around 1420-1440 in Mainz?). The Lorsch Carrying the Cross, around 1430. Fired clay with remains of colored paint. Originally set in bold colors and gold, this group is one of the main works of clay sculptures from the Middle Rhine region. The use of models for faces, chainmail and bespoke parts made the manufacturing process easier. Slight, hand-made transformations are sufficient to give the figures a finely nuanced expression. The cross bearer and two half-naked thief figures who led the procession, as well as a kneeling male donor have been in Russia since 1945.
Deutsch: Mittelrheinische Werkstatt.
