Description
English: This very colorful, ‘70s-looking image is a contoured sea-surface temperature map of the Southern Hemisphere created from Improved TIROS Operational Satellite (ITOS) data from September 6-8, 1970. At the center of the image is Antarctica, and the colored rings surrounding it represent the temperature of the Southern Hemisphere ocean in 5-degree Celsius increments. ITOS-1 inaugurated the second generation of a space-based system to provide continuous, day-to-day observations of Earth's weather systems. The satellite flew in a polar, sun-synchronous orbit and had an operational life of 510 days, taking more than 100,000 images of Earth.
