Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Somnath is the holy place of the Aadi Jyotirling Shree Somnath Mahadev and the sacred soil where from Bhagvan Shri Krishna took his last journey to his neejdham. The temple is built at the shore of the Arabian ocean on the western corner of Indian subcontinent. Somnath temple is first among the twelve Aadi Jyotirlings of India. It has a strategic location on the western coast of India. The Pran-Pratistha at the existing temple was done on 11th May 1951 by then President of India, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Reconstructed several times in the past after repeated destruction by several invaders and rulers, the present temple was reconstructed in the Chaulukya style of Hindu temple architecture and completed in May 1951. The reconstruction was started under the orders of the ex-Home Minister of India Vallabhbhai Patel and completed after his death. The temple is considered sacred due to the various legends connected to it. Somnath means "Lord of the Soma", an epithet of Lord Shiva. This photo of Somnath temple was taken by me during my visit to Somnath in April 2018.
