Sommerveita er antakelig den veita som har hatt de fleste navn opp gjennom tidene her i byen. Nevnes kan i fleng: Øvre Almenning, Øvre Geilan, Kjeldsgårdveita, Skitthullet, Prosteveita, Generalsveita, Helvedesveita og nå Sommerveita. Det er eieren av Svaneapoteket, som med sin bakgård grenser til veitas sørvestlige del, som er opphavet til navnet. Han het Otto Sommer, og var hoffagent. Det er vanskelig å redegjøre for hva tittelen innebærer. Han døde i 1793.

Skitthullet ble veistumpen i den vestligste delen av Sommerveita hetende, enten fordi det var så skittent der, eller også etter et vertshus med dette navn. I en rettssak før 1681, blir en mann tiltalt fordi han hadde solgt øl til elever ved Katedralskolen. Han betegnes som boende i Skitthullet, men ettersom man helt opp til midten av forrige århundre hadde vansker med å få drenert vannet i veita, er det nok skitten som har gitt strøket betegnelsen.
