Solonchak at Manych-Gudilo Lake near the village of Manychsky, Yashaltinsy District, Kalmykia, Russia

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The locals call those plants "Solonchak" because they grow on salty soil like the river banks of the salty Manych-Gudilo Lake. The word is derived from the Russian word for salt, i.e. "sol'" (соль). However, while the locals use the word Solonchak for the plants, the word actually refers to the salty soil on which the plants grow. The soil is said to have therapeutic features. In the past, people used to travel to the lake to treat skin and joint issues. The plant is likey from the Amaranthaceae family, of the Salicornia species.
