O Couto de Linhares foi pertença da família Sampaio desde o terceiro quartel do século XIV, quando D. João I concedeu a Vasco Pires de Sampaio o senhorio de diversos territórios de Trás-os-Montes como recompensa pelos serviços prestados durante a crise de 1383-85 (AGUILAR, 1980, p. 20 e 87). Apesar da permanência nesta região desde tempos tão remotos, o solar que hoje conhecemos foi construído apenas no decorrer do século XVIII. Desconhecem-se as circunstâncias que envolveram a sua edificação mas é possível que estejam associadas a um período de especial importância para a família, pois os volumes compactos com dupla fachada de aparato, onde os dois brasões ocupam uma posição de destaque, testemunham o poder e o prestígio de que gozavam os seus habitantes. A fachada virada a Sul, de piso único, é marcada pela abertura de duas janelas de moldura recortada e, ao centro, um portal de verga abatida com moldura de volutas e concheados. Neste eixo, encontra-se o brasão dos Sampaio, Tavares e Morais, que interrompe a linha da cornija elevando-a, para envolver a pedra de armas e formar um frontão contracurvado interrompido (LOPES, 1996, p. 27). A outra fachada, orientada a Oeste, comunga das mesmas pilastras nos cunhais, coroadas por fogaréus, desenvolvendo-se em dois pisos que se abrem para a zona da Quinta. No piso térreo, menos cuidado, cinco portas de arco abatido e, no superior, seis janelas de guilhotina semelhantes à da fachada Sul envolvem a central, de sacada e no eixo da qual se exibe o brasão. Este revela algumas diferenças relativamente ao do outro alçado, com as armas dos Sousas do Prado, dos Tavares e dos Morais (IDEM, p. 25).
