[edit]DescriptionSnow in the Midwestern United States (MODIS 2022-03-10).jpg |
English: The first weekend of the Northern Hemisphere’s climatological spring carried a wallop in the Midwestern United States in early March 2022. A severe winter storm dumped rain, sleet, and snow across most of the Midwest and brought violent weather to parts of Iowa, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Ohio from March 4-7. As many as 13 tornadoes touched down in Iowa on March 5, including an EF-4 tornado that left at least 7 dead as it ripped through Madison, Warren, Polk, and Jasper Counties. Two additional EF-1 tornadoes, one in Wisconsin and one in Illinois also occurred on that date. On March 6-7, the storm also triggered two tornadoes in Indiana, two in Ohio, and four in Arkansas. A second winter storm followed closely behind, laying additional snow across the Midwest.
On March 7, 2022, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Terra satellite acquired a true-color image of the US Midwest blanketed with swaths of snow. The states seen along the western (left) tier are North Dakota, Nebraska, and part of northern Kansas. To the east, parts of Michigan and Wisconsin are seen in the north, with Iowa center and northern Missouri to the south. |
