നിബിഡവനപ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇവയെ കണ്ടുവരുന്നത്. ഇരുചിറകുകളും വിടർത്തുമ്പോൾ 210 മില്ലീമീറ്റർ നീളമുണ്ട്. ചെമപ്പ് കലർന്ന തവിട്ടുനിറമാണ് ഇതിന്. മുൻചിറകുകളിൽ പാമ്പിന്റെ കണ്ണുകളെപ്പോലെ കറുത്ത പൊട്ടുകളുണ്ട്. ശത്രുക്കളിൽനിന്ന് രക്ഷനേടാൻ ഇതുപകരിക്കുന്നു. മുൻ-പിൻ ചിറകുകളിൽ വെളുത്ത നിറത്തിൽ ത്രികോണ അടയാളങ്ങളുണ്ട്. ചിറകുകൾക്കു പിന്നിൽ പാമ്പിന്റെ തലയുടെ രൂപമുള്ളതിനാൽ സ്‌നേക്‌സ് ഹെഡ് എന്നും ഇതിനെ വിളിക്കുന്നുണ്ട്. സാധാരണ ശലഭങ്ങളെപ്പോലെ ജീവിതചക്രമുള്ള ഇവ നിത്യഹരിതവൃക്ഷങ്ങളുടെ ഇലകളിലാണ് മുട്ടയിടുന്നത്. കറുപ്പ്, ബ്രൗൺ, പർപ്പിൾ നിറങ്ങളിൽ അറ്റ്‌ലസ് ശലഭങ്ങളെ കണ്ടെത്തിയിട്ടുണ്ട്. ഈ ശലഭങ്ങൾക്ക് രണ്ടുമാസം മാത്രമേ ആയുസ്സുള്ളൂ. അറ്റ്‌ലസ് ശലഭങ്ങൾ ആവാസവ്യവസ്ഥയിൽനിന്ന് അധികദൂരം പറന്നുപോകാറില്ല.[1]
തെക്കുകിഴക്കൻ ഏഷ്യയിലെ വനമേഖലകളിൽ ഈർപ്പമുള്ള പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലാണ് ഇവയെ കണ്ടുവരാറുള്ളത്. സാധാരണഗതിയിൽ 10 മുതൽ 12 ഇഞ്ചുവരെയാണ് വിടർത്തിയ ചിറകുകളുടെ നീളം. ഈ വിഭാഗത്തിലെ ആൺശലഭങ്ങളേക്കാൾ പെൺശലഭങ്ങൾക്കാണ് വലുപ്പവും ഭംഗിയും കൂടുതൽ. രണ്ടാഴ്ച മാത്രം നീണ്ടു നിൽക്കുന്ന വർണ ശബളമായ ജീവിതത്തിൽ ഈ ശലഭങ്ങൾ ആഹാരം കഴിക്കാറില്ല. പുഴുവായിരിക്കെ ആഹരിച്ചതിന്റെ കരുതൽ ഉപയോഗപ്പെടുത്തിയാണ് പ്രജനനത്തിനു മാത്രമായുള്ള ജീവിതം നയിക്കുന്നത്. വായ ഭാഗം തീരെ വികാസം പ്രാപിക്കാറില്ല. പെണ്ണിന്റെ പ്രത്യേക ഹോർമോൺ ഗന്ധത്തിൽ ആകൃഷ്ടരായാണ് ആൺ ശലഭം എത്തുന്നത്.
ഇലകൾ കോട്ടിവളച്ചു പട്ടുനൂൽ കൊണ്ടു നെയ്താണ് പുഴു സമാധിയിരിക്കുന്നത്. നാലാഴ്ച കൊണ്ടു ഇവ ശലഭങ്ങളായി വെളിയിൽ വരും.
