| Description |
Around 81st & King are a few blocks of small houses (garlows, a portmanteau of garage and bungalow) which were built at the rear lot line. The idea apparently was that people would eventually build something grander in the front yard, facing King -- then the grand "South Parkway." Most people never really got around to it and added on bits to their bungalows instead. Thus, the alley has a uniquely intimate feel; walking down it is almost like walking down an apartment building's back porch steps, since you're right next to people's kitchens. And the front yards feel like, well, back yards. This guy, however, built a smokehouse out front -- just like he'd have done with any big yard out in the countryside. By definition, he must have the best BBQs on the block. |
