English: A layer of thick smog, seen here from space, lead Chinese officials to declare the first ever “red" alert for Beijing air pollution on December 7, 2015. The hazardous air quality sent the Chinese capital into a shutdown with officials ordering schools to close, halting outdoor construction and restricting car use in an attempt to protect people from the deadly air.
