ove the White Cliffsandstone as probably the Todilto of the Arizona section. But themarine Jurassic of southern Utah is also above the White Cliff, hencethe question arises again, Are there two marine Jurassic horizons oris the Todilto of Arizona to be correlated with the marine beds ofUtah, as indicated in figure 6, rather than with the shaly beds lowerin the sections. Less uncertainty exists in the correlation of the Arizona sectionwith those of northern New Mexico and southern Colorado. Accord-ing to Gregory the tripartite division of the La Plata group is evenmore conspicuous in Arizona than it is in southern Colorado. TheWingate sandstone is traceable eastward to Thoreau in New Mexico, and the Navajo is probably equivalent to the two sandstones, 290 feetthick, of the Thoreau section which underlie the variegated beds. 1 Lee, W. T., Jour. Geol., vol. 9, pp. 343-352, 1901. 2 Gregory, H. E., U. S. Geol. Survey Prof. Paper 93, 1917. 22 SMITHSONIAN MISCELLANEOUS COLLE< riONS VOL. 69

Farther to the east this limestone is recognized as the peculiarbituminous shaly limestone which underlies the gypsum of theEl Rito section, with typical Wingate sandstone below it and anothersandstone above. Still farther east, near Jemez, N. Mex.,1 the limestone and gypsumappear above the Wingate, but no equivalent of the Navajo is foundunless it is included in the lower part of the beds here classed asMcElmo. However, near Cerrillos, south of Santa Fe, and also inthe Sandia Mountains, east of Albuquerque, the gypsum, limestone, and Wingate sandstone are typically developed, according to Darton, and between the gypsum and the overlying variegated beds are rockscomposed chiefly of pink and yellow sandston
