Summary
[edit]DescriptionSmithey Fen Engine - old pumping engine - geograph.org.uk - 1139602.jpg |
English: Smithey Fen Engine - old pumping engine Visible inside the building in a room that looks like a throw-back to several decades ago.
Hugh invited me to comment, so I will: - Originally built 1842 for a 40 horsepower single cylinder beam engine driving a scoopwheel. In 1915 this was supplemented by a 80 bhp hot bulb oil engine. In 1942 the beam engine was replaced by the existing 156 bhp Ruston twin cylinder diesel engine type 10HRC with a Gwynnes pump discharging 120 tons per minute (a ton is 224 gallons). All you could wish to know about fenland steam and diesel engines is in Fenland Pumping Engines by K S G Hinde, 2006. This is a specialist book. R L Hills wrote Mills, Machines and Uncountable Costly Necessities many years ago and updated it as The Drainage of the Fens. Chris Allen |
