Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Slow worm (Anguis fragilis) This is the legless lizard Anguis fragilis, commonly known as the "slow worm". It superficially resembles a snake, but is really a lizard - in common with other lizards it has eyelids, whereas snakes do not. They are not often caught basking, but this one was out on the cliff-top on a chilly winter's day and probably was too cold to retreat to somewhere safer. They are supposed to be hibernate during the winter months. The 'fragilis' part of the latin name refers to the lizard's ability to lose its tail when caught by a predator. The tail does not properly grow back.
