Summary
[edit]DescriptionSleets Gill Cave - geograph.org.uk - 1776865.jpg |
English: Sleets Gill Cave. At the head of Sleets Gill. The entrance is normally dry but has a sinister reputation for flooding without warning long after rain has stopped ("the whole known cave except The Ramp floods to the roof" - warning in Northern Caves vol 1, Dalesman Pub Co.). In total there is around 2.4km of passage much of which is of railway tunnel size "one of the most spectacular caves in the district". It was the scene back in 1992 of a spectacular rescue whereby two trapped cavers (both of whom had never used diving gear) were gotten out through 200m of flooded passage by the Upper Wharfedale Fell Rescue Association. This was the first time this had been done successfully with non-divers. |
