Description |
English: Skykomish is located in northeast King County, on the road that goes through Stevens Pass in the Cascade Mountains. The town boomed during the building of the Great Northern Railway in the early 1890s. Later Skykomish industries included lumber mills and shingle mills. A nearby granite quarry supplied Seattle with curbstones and provided building materials for the Washington State Capitol in Olympia.
This 1911 photo shows the buildings along Main Street or Railroad Avenue in Skykomish. The tallest building (center) is the Sky Hotel. A group of Skykomish residents pose for the photographer on the wooden sidewalk.
