| Description |
English: Skinner's Lock, Grantham Canal. Like many locks on the Grantham Canal lock number 4 has been dismantled. In the centre of the photograph you can see the concrete "cascade" which holds back the water in the upper level, see 750663. Over its 33 miles the Grantham Canal rises 140 feet from Trent Lock to the Grantham Wharf. It was primarily constructed to transport coal from the Nottinghamshire coal fields to Grantham. Lock number 5, Sander's Lock, can just be made out in the far distance.
This photograph was taken from the footbridge that crosses the lock where the lower lockgates once were. This allows walkers to use either bank of the canal as far as Cotgrave Bridge, see 161576 |
