Summary
[edit]DescriptionSkeuphylakion of Hagia Sophia in May 2022.jpg |
English: The skeuphylakion of Hagia Sophia photographed in May 2022. According to modern archaeologists, this building is the only standing part of the Theodosian first cathedral: the round skeuphylakion of the Constantinian first basilica, having survived the fire that destroyed the rest of the building, was replaced with the present rotunda in the 5th century. Others have dated the building to the time of the Justinianic third church. Adjoining the skeuphylakion on the far side is the staircase connecting it with the basilica. On the right is the imaret built in the Ottoman period and converted into the Carpet Museum in the 20th century. This area, on the basilica's north-western side, is inaccessible since the conversion to a mosque by Erdoğan. In the distance is the north-western minaret. |
