my publishers, received some sixweeks after my return, first suggested to me theidea that possibly an account of my wanderingsmight not be uninteresting even to the generalreader. Upon this hint I commenced to write, and in three short months from the receipt of my iv Preface. publishers letter, I had despatched to them themanuscript and illustrations of Travels inLad^k, Tartary, and Kashmir. For enabling me to do this in the scanty mo-ments of leisure which my duties allowed me, Ihave to thank, first, my memory; secondly, thediary of a fellow-traveller; and lastly, the ableand interesting works of Bernier, Jacquemont,Moorcroffc, Gerard, and Cunningham. The proof sheets will be corrected by one ofthe companions of my journeyings, who will bein England in time to do so; and you, myreaders, will have yawned or laughed over^ beenbored or amused, by the perusal of my narrativelong before the publication will meet its, authorseyes.
