HEAD, IN BEITISH MUSEUM To face p. 243 HELLENISTIC SCULPTURE 243 regarded as a characteristic product of the early Hel-lenistic age, with its tendency to imitate the work ofthe great masters of the fourth century, and often tocombine together the qualities of different schools. Another head that has sometimes been connectedwith the Niobids is that of a youthful hero in theBritish Museum ; it was once part of a statue, andis looking up with an anxious expression. Starkactually identified it as one of the sons of Niobe; butthe type of head is rather that which is generallyassigned to the school of Lysippus, resembling theApoxyomenos rather than the Aglas; though it hassomething of the vigour of expression of the latter,this is probably to be interpreted in relation to theprobable action of the statue ; unless, indeed, it berightly identified as belonging to the Lysippean typeof Hermes, binding his sandals while he looks up fororders to Zeus.
