Summary
[edit]DescriptionSite of St Paul's in the Bail - geograph.org.uk - 108862.jpg |
English: Site of St Paul's in the Bail. Although the building demolished in 1971 was largely Victorian, the line of churches which have stood on this site stretches back into the very distant past - to the last days of the Roman Empire or the years immediately following. A "Hanging Bowl" used in services in the early Saxon period was recovered from the site and can be seen in the Cathedral Treasury. Below the remains of the earliest church archaeologists have found traces of the wood-built legionary headquarters from the very beginning of the Roman occupation. This view looks east toward Bailgate. |
