Summary
[edit]DescriptionSite of Exceat Church, near Seaford - geograph.org.uk - 1084946.jpg |
English: Site of Exceat Church, near Seaford In 1913 a local lad found the foundations of this ancient church which had been lost for hundreds of years. It was excavated by the Sussex Archaeological Society later that same year and the thick walls of a small Norman Church were unearthed. This stone marks the site. The list of rectors for the church date from 1255 until 1528 when the parish was annexed to nearby West Dean (even though it had been destroyed many years earlier). The church was probably built in about 1090 and was destroyed during French raids in the late 1300s. The cliffs at Newhaven can be seen in the upper left of this view and Exceat Bridge and the Golden Galleon Pub are in the valley just above the memorial stone. |
