Summary
[edit]DescriptionSite of Brimscombe Port - Eastern End - geograph.org.uk - 1054663.jpg |
English: Site of Brimscombe Port - Eastern End Brimscombe Port was built as an inland port serving the upper Stroud Valley. It also served as a transhipment point between vessels arriving here from the River Severn via the Stroudwater Canal, such as smaller Trows, and shorter Thames barges travelling over the Cotswolds via the Thames & Severn Canal.
Brimscombe Port was the headquarters and hub of the T&S Canal Company; there were once wharves, cranes, warehouses and even a boat weighing machine here. Gloucestershire County Council took over the near derelict Thames & Severn Canal and the port in 1900 and the main warehouse was converted and used for educational purposes. It survived intact and in good condition until its destruction in 1965 when the whole port area was converted into an industrial estate. Things are set to change yet again as part of the restoration programme currently planned by the Cotswold Canal Partnership http://www.cotswoldcanalsproject.org/ which will see the port re-excavated and boats return to this area. |
