Title |
Silvered copper-alloy forgery of denarius of Septimius Severus |
||
Description |
English: Roman silver-plated copper-alloy forgery of a denarius of Septimius Severus, dating to c. 202 - 410 AD. The coin is a mule, combining the obverse of denarii struck 200 - 202 AD with a reverse type belonging to coins minted at Rome between 202 - 210 AD, and Emisa between 194 - 195 AD. Of the two, those from the Rome mint are probably what this forger drew upon, therefore dating the production of this coin to any time after c. 202 AD. The forger obviously didn't know (or care) whether s/he used the correct combination of types, as long as they both appeared, at some time, on Severus' coinage. Obverse of right-facing laureate bust: SEVERVS AVG [PART M]AX. Reverse of seated Fortuna: [FORTVNA] REDVX. The coin is 19.54mm in diameter, 2.95mm in thickness and weighs 2.74g. |
