[edit]DescriptionSikorsky CH-3E of the 20th Helicopter Squadron approaching a landing zone in Southeast Asia, in June 1968 (542306).jpg |
English: A U.S. Air Force Sikorsky CH-3E Jolly Green Giant (s/n 63-9681) of the 20th Helicopter Squadron approaching a landing zone in Southeast Asian jungle during "Operation Pony Express". The operation included covert transportation of, and the provision of aerial support for, indigenous soldiers and material operating across the Laotian and North Vietnamese borders during the Vietnam War. Note that the helicopter is unmarked and that the "USAF" in front of the serial number on the tail has been overpainted. The CH-3E 63-9681 was later shot down on 13 August 1970 while in service with the 21st Special Operations Squadron. It was flying between Nakhon Phanom and Ubon Royal Thai Air Force Base when it was hit by a 12.7mm round which blew up the hydraulic accumulators and knocked out both engines causing the aircraft to crash. Four of the crewmen were killed. |
