| Description |
English: Following the death of her father, King George VI, who died in the night between 5 and 6 February 1952, Princess Elizabeth formally proclaimed herself as Queen and Head of the Commonwealth and Defender of the Faith. The new monarch read an official Proclamation declaring her reign as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second on 8 February 1952, which read "By the sudden death of my dear father I am called to assume the duties and responsibilities of sovereignty ... My heart is too full for me to say more to you today than I shall always work, as my father did throughout his reign, to advance the happiness and prosperity of my peoples, spread as they are all the world over."
Due to geographical location and differences in time zones, the accession was not proclaimed in New Zealand until 11 February 1952, by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg. The proclamation was attended by the Chief Justice, Sir Humphrey O'Leary, and members of the Executive Council, who took the oath of allegiance after the ceremony.
