[edit]DescriptionSign for the Fighting Cocks, Godshill - geograph.org.uk - 1039370.jpg |
English: Sign for the Fighting Cocks, Godshill The Romans introduced cock-fighting to Britain and it was prohibited by Cromwell in 1653. It remained popular until sterner measures were taken in the nineteenth century. Henry VIII and James I were said to have been keen on cock-fights. Large sums of money were wagered on the outcome of the fights between specially bred birds equipped with steel spurs. |
