Summary
[edit]DescriptionShropshire Union Canal at Woodseaves Cutting - geograph.org.uk - 1590547.jpg |
English: Shropshire Union Canal at Woodseaves Cutting. This stretch of canal is enshrouded in tall trees and vegetation covered sides. From late spring to early autumn, shade, dampness and leafy greens dominate. Many parts rarely, or never see the sun. Cameras seem to over-compensate for the dull lighting, and boost the colour saturation. I have already reduced the green-ness in this one because it was so exaggerated!
Woodseaves Cutting (which has its resident ghost!) is the longest cutting on any canal in Britain. Some parts are too narrow for boats to pass each other without extreme care and occasional waiting in passing places. The sides are steep and there have been many slips, blocking the canal. Boat speeds are limited to around two miles per hour; sometimes less. Early canals tended to keep earthworks to a minimum by winding round hills, whereas later canals such as this one tended to have more direct routes, with deeper cuttings and higher embankments. |
