North of the Snake the valley iswithout timber. The hills are low and coveredwith sage brush and scattered tufts of tall grass.Here is the paradise of bird shooting, the creeksand sage being the resort of countless wild duckand prairie hens. Among the mountains thatborder the northern side of the valley is foundthe larger game. Numerous hunting partiesmake the cabins at First Crossing their camp,and from it take long tramps into the wildernessof backwoods. The trappers we talked withsupport themselves by their rifles, and havehardly known any other life than the one theynow lead. On ourone side were had occasional glimpses of theriver, but to the right were thickly growingtrees. Later we crossed the stream, stoppingmidway to enjoy its great beauty. Each bankwas heavily fringed with trees, drooping over igo SHOSHONE. the water and mirrored in the placid surface.In a Httle cove near by stood a soHtary heronindustriously fishing for his breakfast, and be-yond were some ducks paddling contentedlyabout and unmindful of our presence. Not asound, save the quiet murmur of the trees andriver, disturbed the silence, and the air washeavy with the perfumes of the forest. Theview was our last of the Snake. On gainingthe opposite bank our route would be north-ward, while that of the river was due east. Itwas well, I thought, to see the stream as itnow appeared.
