Summary

[edit]
Description

Short Belfast C1 at the RAF Museum, Cosford, Shropshire, 8 July 2020. It is not in a good position for photography, unfortunately. The Belfast was the first British aircraft designed from the outset as a long range military transport and was the first in the world to have a fully automatic landing system. Bristol and Canadair collaborated in the design.

It was the largest transport the RAF had operated up to that time and had greater capacity than a Lockheed Hercules. Its capacious hold was designed to accommodate a Blue Streak MRBM (Medium Range Ballistic Missile), although later that was cancelled. The Belfast could carry two Polaris missiles, three Bloodhound SAM’s, up to 200 troops and a whole variety of helicopters, tanks (including a Chieftain), artillery and assorted military vehicles etc.

The prototype’s first flight was in 1966 and apparently it was a joy to fly from the start. It entered service in 1967. However, because of defence cuts, this very useful military transport was phased out of service by 1976. Civilian freighter airlines snapped some of them up, as they appreciated their cavernous freight hold.

Ironically, during the Falklands War 1982 and the Gulf War 1991 the RAF had a need for the aircraft and chartered those of TAC Heavy LiftService at a cost which was more than if the Belfasts had been kept in service by the RAF into the 1990’s! RAF Hercules simply couldn’t accommodate the helicopters and vehicles that the Belfast could. The last civilian Belfast ceased flying in 2010 in Australia.
