Summary
[edit]DescriptionShip's Bell, HMS Bangor - geograph.org.uk - 842963.jpg |
English: Ship's Bell, HMS Bangor. Ship's Bell of HMS Bangor (see 555293), seen on a visit to her 'home' port.
Strikes of a ship's bell are used to indicate the time aboard a ship and to regulate the sailors' duty watches. Unlike civil clock bells, the strikes of the bell do not accord to the number of the hour. Instead, there are eight bells, one for each half-hour of a four-hour watch. Bells would be struck every half-hour, and in a pattern of pairs for easier counting, with any odd bells at the end of the sequence. Traditionally the bell would have been constructed of brass but this example appears to be another metal. The name of the ship is usually displayed on the bell alongside the year the vessel was launched, in this case 1999 (although she was not officially commissioned until July 26th 2000). |
