Summary
[edit]DescriptionShetland Bus memorial - geograph.org.uk - 971182.jpg |
English: Shetland Bus memorial During the night of the 8th/ 9th April 1940 Germany launched an unprovoked attack on Norway. The so called 'Shetland Bus' was a series of boats which carried out clandestine operations between Shetland and Norway from 1942, making almost 100 crossings bringing agents and refugees and even Christmas trees! The bus boats could only operate during the darkest and stormiest times, with their best protection as appearing to be ordinary fishing boats. The memorial is made of stones from Shetland and Norway, symbolising the ever-lasting friendship between Shetland and Norway. |
