Summary
[edit]DescriptionSheldonian head - geograph.org.uk - 721644.jpg |
English: Sheldonian head One of 13 heads or 'herms' on top of pillars outside the Sheldonian theatre in Broad Street. They are sometimes referred to as Emperors, Tyrants, Philosophers or even Apostles but in fact they are nameless and purely decorative. This is the third set to be made, by the sculptor Michael Black in 1972 (I remember seeing them taking shape in his workshop by the river in Grandpont); earlier ones (replaced in 1868) found their way into many local gardens, and their replacements, which also crumbled rapidly, were felt to look more picturesque as "mouldering busts" (John Betjeman)than in their pristine state. Generations of undergraduates have adorned them with traffic cones and the like. |
