Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Soldier and his mule, Western Front, during World War I. A soldier, standing in the mud, with his mule resting her head over his shoulder. He is dressed in a rather bizarre goat- or sheep-skin jacket, possibly one of those issued in the early years of the war, or possibly a home-made one.

Despite the sentimentality of the caption, it is undoubtedly true that many of the transport and cavalry men did become fond of the animals they worked with. Without some degree of trust it would have been impossible to control the animals in these extreme conditions.
[Original reads: ' "She is very stupid but I am very fond of he[r]".']
