Summary

[edit]
Description

Shaped horse trapping woven in the 1600s in India. Of velvet brocade, with silk and gilt-metal thread. Part of the exhibit "Art and Stories of Mughal India" at the Cleveland Museum of Art in Cleveland, Ohio.

A trapping is an ornamental covering or harness worn by a horse. This covering features the floral design common in Mughal art since the reign of Shah Jahan (1628 to 1658). The poppy in the center may reflect the opium which Shah Jahangir indulged in daily.
